Ambay Hospital

Down here at 1, Sahibabad, right in the middle of Lajpat Nagar, you’ll find Ambay Hospital. It’s not a fancy place with a revolving door or a big lobby. We just have a regular front door that stays open most of the day to let a bit of air in from the street. Sahibabad is a working neighborhood, so the building reflects that. It is a bit older, which means the pipes sometimes make a clanking noise when the water is running. Our staff is small, and we all know each other’s business. It’s the kind of place where the janitor knows the patients' names just as well as the doctors do. We spend a lot of time moving files from one desk to another because we still like having things on paper instead of computers. Lajpat Nagar can be quite loud, especially with the local markets nearby, but inside we try to keep things as orderly as possible. There’s a bench out front where the old men sit and talk while they wait for their wives to finish. We don’t have a cafeteria, but there’s a good samosa shop just two doors down that everyone goes to for lunch. Some days we are so packed that people are standing in the hallway, and other days it’s so quiet you could hear a pin drop. We just take it as it comes. It’s a practical, local hospital for the people who live right here. We’ve been at this address for a long time and don't plan on moving.
