We are located in Kamalpur No. 2, Anvil, over in West Midnapur. It’s one of those local spots where everyone knows each other’s names. Our office is very simple. We just have some old desks, a few computers that take a while to start up, and a lot of calendars pinned to the walls. We spend most of our time talking to people about where they need to go. Whether it’s a bus to the next town or a long train journey across the country, we try to get it sorted out for them. It’s not a fancy travel agency with glossy posters or coffee machines. We mostly just write everything down in our ledger books. Sometimes the phone lines go down and we have to manage everything with our mobiles. It gets a bit chaotic when the festival seasons come around. Everyone wants to travel at the same time and the tickets get scarce. We’ve been here in Kamalpur for a long time. We know the routes and the schedules pretty well by now. There are only three of us working here. We take turns going out to get tea from the stall nearby. The office gets a bit hot in the summer, so we usually keep the front door wide open. You’ll see some of the local people hanging around and chatting. We don’t have a big neon sign, just a small painted one in the window. We aren’t trying to be a big company. We just want to help our neighbors get where they’re going.
