Gowhar Ahmad Halwai

Started early today like most days. Asarganj is quiet in the morning until the sun comes up properly. We are right here in Downtown near the SBI Bank branch. You can usually smell what we are cooking from the street. It is a bit cramped in the kitchen area but we manage. My hands are usually covered in flour or sugar by ten in the morning. People coming from the bank stop in to see what is fresh. The stove stays hot all afternoon and the tiles on the floor are a bit worn out from all the walking back and forth. We don't have fancy chairs or anything. Just some simple benches and the glass counter where the trays sit. Sometimes the delivery truck blocks the narrow road for a bit and neighbors complain but that is just how it goes here. We have been in this spot for a while now. It gets very busy during festivals and we barely have time to sit down then. The fan in the corner makes a clicking noise that I should probably fix one day. We just focus on making the sweets and keeping things clean enough for the health inspector. It is honest work and it keeps us busy from dawn till late evening. Most people know where we are because of the bank being so close. We put the trays out and wait for the regulars to show up for their daily fix.
