If you are heading through Jafferkhanpet, you might find yourself on Lakshmi Street in Kamaraj Colony. Our spot is right at No:5. It’s a typical Chennai neighborhood, a bit tucked away, but we’ve been here long enough that most people know the way. Being in Tamilnadu, the sun is usually beating down hard on the roof. We spend most of our hours among the tyres, moving them around and getting them ready for whoever pulls up. Lakshmi Street has its own rhythm. Mornings start slow, then the activity picks up around noon. We aren't doing anything revolutionary at this address. It’s just a place of work. The shop floor stays a bit dusty because of the road, but we try to keep things organized as best as we can. We have the usual routine of opening the shutters and getting the stock checked. No:5 is easy to spot once you get into the colony. We talk to the neighbors and keep an eye on the street while we work. It’s not a corporate office with air conditioning in every corner. It feels more like a workshop should. Sometimes the rain comes down hard and we have to move everything back from the entrance. We have seen the area change over the years, but Lakshmi Street stays pretty much the same. Most people just come in, get what they need, and head back out into the Jafferkhanpet traffic. We just keep the doors open.
