Singla Rice Mills

Singla Rice Mills is our family business over on Madher Road in Giddarbaha. Most people around here connect us with Sohan Lal Darshan Kumar because that is the name we have used for a long time. The mill is a busy place, especially when the harvest comes in and the tractors are lined up all the way down the road. We spend our days checking the moisture in the grain and making sure the hullers are set right. It is not an easy job because the machines are loud and the air is always full of husks. We have a small office where we sit to drink tea and talk to the farmers who come in. The furniture is old and the walls could use a fresh coat of paint, but it works for us. We are not interested in looking like a big corporation. We just want to do our work and get the rice ready for the market. Some days are longer than others, especially when we have a big order to finish or if the electricity goes out for a few hours. We just take it as it comes. My father and my brothers are usually around the mill somewhere, either checking the bags or fixing a belt on one of the motors. It is a practical life, focused on the grain and the seasons. We have lived in Giddarbaha forever, so we know just about everyone who walks through the gate. We keep the mill running as best as we can.
