Surya Rice Mills

Out here in Shekhu Village, things move a bit slower than they do in the big city. Surya Rice Mills is located right near the bus stand, so it's quite easy to find us if you’re coming through Malout. We’ve been operating from this spot for many years. The mill is almost always humming with the sound of the machinery. You can hear it from all the way down the road. Muktsar District is known for its wide fields, so being right in the middle of the farming area makes sense for what we do. We handle a lot of paddy and rice every season. Most of the workers live nearby, either right here in the village or just a short walk away. It’s a local operation through and through. The Malout Post Office isn't too far either if we need to send out any paperwork or letters. During the peak harvest months, the whole place gets really loud and dusty, but that is just part of the life here. We don’t really change much around the mill. The building looks much the same as it did ten years ago, maybe just a little more worn in by the weather. We put a lot of effort into the way we handle the grain ourselves. It is hard work, standing on your feet all day and moving heavy loads, but it is what we know. People recognize us by the noise of the equipment. Being close to the bus stand means there's always some activity around the gate.
