You’ll find us at No. 113 B in the Aanaj Mandi. If you’ve ever been to the grain market, you know it’s a world of its own. Early mornings are the craziest times around here. There are trucks everywhere, people shouting, and the heavy smell of grain in the air. Our shop is right in the middle of all that action. It’s an old building, nothing special to look at, but it does the job. My family has been doing this for a long time. We have sacks piled up and scales for weighing everything that comes in. It gets very dusty, especially when the wind kicks up the chaff during the harvest season. We don't have air conditioning, just a couple of old ceiling fans that hum all day long. People come in to settle accounts or just to see what the market prices are doing. We write everything down in big ledgers by hand. It’s not a high-tech operation at all. We know most of the people who come through the door by name. We spend our days watching the trucks load and unload and making sure the counts are right. By the time the sun starts to set, the mandi quietens down a bit and we can finally sweep out the floor. It’s hard work and the days are long, but it’s what we’ve always done. We just take things as they come and try to keep the business going.
