We are over here in Ward No 4, right in the middle of Sadar Bazar. If you know Purani Abadi in Putholi, then you know how busy it gets around here. Our work is all about stone. Every day is pretty much the same, waking up and heading down to the shop where the slabs are stacked up. There is always a layer of fine white dust on everything, and the sound of trucks moving through the narrow streets is something you just get used to. People stop by to look at different types of granite or marble, and we spend a lot of time just talking about measurements and how heavy some of these pieces are. It is hard work, but it keeps us busy. The area is quite old, so the buildings are close together and everyone knows everyone else. Sometimes the power goes out and we just sit outside on plastic chairs until it comes back. We don't have a big fancy showroom with glass walls or anything like that. It’s just a practical space where the stone gets handled and moved. We’ve been at this address for a while now and most of our neighbors are also doing some kind of trade. It’s a simple way of living. We just focus on getting the right pieces out to whoever needs them and making sure the inventory is okay. Most of the day is spent checking the quality of the blocks that come in. It’s what we do.
