You can find us in Subhash Palli, right near the Maa Nursing Home in Birpara. Being so close to the nursing home means it’s usually a bit quieter on our street than in the main market, which is nice. Our hardware store has been here for years, and we’ve packed every inch of the walls with tools, plumbing pipes, and boxes of nails. It’s one of those places where you have to know exactly where you put something or you’ll never find it again. We don’t have a computer system to track everything, so we rely on memory and a lot of scribbled notes. Customers come in looking for a specific screw or a tap, and we spend a few minutes digging through the bins to find the right size. The floor is old stone and it’s seen a lot of boots over the years. We open early in the morning because that’s when the local builders like to pick up their supplies before heading to a job site. It gets a bit dark in the back of the store, so we have a few bare bulbs hanging from the ceiling. It’s a simple life, selling things that people need to fix their homes. We talk a lot about the weather and the local news with whoever walks in. It’s just a basic neighborhood shop where we try to be helpful and keep the shelves stocked.
