Down here on Jawahar Road, things move pretty fast. Partumal Lakhumal Rice & Dal Mills is right in the thick of it in Bharthana. We handle both rice and dal, which means we have double the work sometimes. The machines for the pulses are different and they need a lot of looking after so they don't jam up. It gets very hot in the afternoons, especially in the summer months when there isn't much of a breeze coming through the doors. We spend a lot of time just moving sacks from one corner to the other. There is always someone coming in asking about prices or when their batch will be ready. We try to keep things organized, but when ten trucks show up at once on Jawahar Road, it gets a bit chaotic. The street gets blocked and people start honking, which just adds to the noise of the mill. We have a few steady workers who have been with us for years. They know the sounds of the engines better than I do. If something sounds off, they know exactly which belt is slipping. We don't spend much money on making the place look pretty because the dust just covers everything anyway. It is a simple life of grinding and packing, and we are usually too tired at the end of the day to think about much else besides going home and resting up.
