The Els General Store

You’ll find The Els General Store right in the Divine Complex, which is near the main bus stand in Sathyamangalam. Being so close to the bus stand means we see all sorts of people every day. Travelers, students, and locals all stop in for different things. We try to keep a bit of everything on the shelves—soaps, snacks, notebooks, and whatever else people ask for. It gets really crowded in the evenings when the buses are frequent. The shop isn't very large, so we have to stack things pretty high. Sometimes a box falls over, but we just pick it up and keep going. We don't have a fancy computer system; we still write down a lot of things by hand in our ledger. My uncle used to run a shop similar to this, and I learned most of what I know from him. Sathyamangalam is a busy town, and Erode is just a drive away, but we like staying right here by the bus stand. The noise of the engines and the conductors shouting is something we don’t even notice anymore. We know many of the regular commuters who grab their supplies from us before catching their ride home. It’s a simple life running a general store. We open early and close late, making sure people can get what they need at almost any hour. It’s just a plain shop doing its part in the neighborhood.
