R. K. Ganapathi Chettiar Ghee

You can find our small place over at 88 Subash Street. It is right off the main Tirupur Road, which stays busy with all the cars and trucks passing by at all hours. R. K. Ganapathi Chettiar Ghee has been a part of this neighborhood for a while now. Making ghee is a slow, hot process and the heavy smell usually fills up the whole street by noon. Some days it is quite strong, but we are used to it and I think the neighbors are too. We don't do anything too complicated or high-tech here. We take the butter, we melt it down in the big vats, and we watch it carefully so it doesn't burn on the bottom. If you let it go just a few minutes too long, the whole batch is ruined and that’s a lot of money gone. So, someone is always standing there watching the bubbles. The shop isn't very big, and we mostly focus on getting the tins filled up and ready for the people who stop by on their way home. We have some regulars who have been coming here since they were little kids. Now they bring their own children to buy a small jar. It makes the day go by a bit faster when you know the faces walking through the door. The floor gets a bit slippery sometimes from the fat, so we are always scrubbing it with hot water. It’s hard work, especially when the heat is hitting us.
