You can find us in the Shanker Building, which is right near the petrol pump in Thiruvankulam. It’s a convenient spot because everyone knows where the pump is located. We mostly deal with doors and the various fittings that go with them, like handles and hinges. The shop is usually a bit cluttered with door frames and wood samples leaning against the walls. We don't have a lot of space, so we have to be careful how we stack things to avoid them falling. A lot of people from the neighborhood stop by when they’re building a new house or just fixing up an old one. We spend our time showing people the different wood grains and how the handles feel in their hands. It’s a lot of talking and taking measurements. My cousin helps out with the heavy lifting because some of those solid wooden doors are really heavy to move alone. We have a small desk where we write out the receipts by hand in a notebook. The ceiling fan wobbles a bit, but it helps when the humidity gets high in the afternoons. Sometimes we’re out on a job site helping someone fit a frame, so the shop might be locked for an hour or two. We just leave a note on the door for anyone who comes by. It’s a small operation, just a few of us making sure everything works right and stays sturdy.
