Over here at Sainswear, things stay pretty busy with the sewing and the stitching. We are based out of Nayathode, and if you know the area, you know it’s a quiet enough place most of the time. The post office is nearby, which is handy for us. We spend a lot of our time surrounded by rolls of fabric and loose threads that seem to get everywhere. The fans are always running to keep the heat down, but it still gets quite warm inside when all the machines are going at once. It’s not a big corporate setup or anything like that. Just a few of us working on garments and making sure the seams are straight. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to wait a bit, but that’s just life here. We usually start early in the morning before the sun gets too high. There’s always a pile of clothes waiting to be finished or packed up. We don’t really do much talking when the work is heavy, just the sound of the needles clicking away. People from the village stop by sometimes just to say hello or check on an order. It’s a simple way to make a living, and we’ve been doing it this way for a long time. The floor is usually covered in scraps by the end of the day, but we sweep it up and start over the next morning.
