Mavely Institute Of Calligraphy is tucked away in the Carmel Building on Banerji Road. If you walk past too fast, you might miss us, but we’ve been here long enough that most locals know where we are. It’s not a big, loud place. It’s actually quite quiet inside, which helps when you’re trying to focus on writing. We have tables set up and all the pens and ink bottles scattered around. Writing by hand is a slow process, and that’s basically what we do all day. Banerji Road is always loud with buses and cars, so the building offers a bit of a break from all that noise. The Carmel Building has its own character, a bit old-fashioned maybe, but it suits what we do. People come in with different reasons for wanting to learn calligraphy. Some want to fix their messy handwriting, and others just want a hobby that doesn’t involve a screen. We don't have a big staff or anything, just a few of us who enjoy the craft. It’s a lot of sitting and practicing strokes over and over. Sometimes the ink spills or a pen nib breaks, and we just deal with it. It’s a small, practical space. We don't have air conditioning running all the time, just the ceiling fans. It feels like a real workshop. You come in, sit down, and get to work on your lettering. It is a very slow-paced way to spend an afternoon.
