Our spot is located in Kizhakkambalam, Aluva, which is a busy corner of Kochi. We focus on socks here. If you come inside, you will hear a different sound than the sewing machines—the knitting machines for socks have their own rhythm. It is a constant clicking and whirring that fills the room from morning until we lock up. We have heaps of yarn in different colors stacked up against the walls. Sometimes it feels like there is no space to move, but we have a system for where everything goes. The staff here are locals who know the area well. We don't go for fancy titles or big meetings. We just get the work done. The heat in Ernakulam can be quite something, so we have big industrial fans that never seem to stop. Sometimes the yarn gets tangled and someone has to spend an hour sitting quietly to sort it out. It is slow work sometimes, and very fast at others. We pack the finished socks into bags and then into boxes for the trucks. Our address at P B No 5 is easy to find if you are looking for it. It is just a plain building where people come to work, talk about their gardens, and make sure the knitting doesn't skip a stitch. We are used to the noise and the smell of the machines, and it feels like home for most of us.
