Banaras Saree Center

We are right across from Hotel Malabar House in the DD Bazar area. If you’re walking down Gopala Prabhu Road, you can’t really miss us. The shop is filled with sarees from floor to ceiling, which makes it a bit of a tight squeeze sometimes when we have a few customers in at once. We spend our days unfolding fabric and then trying to fold it back up just as neatly, which is harder than it looks. We have all sorts of stuff, mostly Banaras style because that’s what people ask for. There’s no big display or fancy lighting here, just regular tube lights so people can see the real colors of the silk. Sometimes the dust from the fabric makes us sneeze. We’ve been in this spot for a good while now. It’s a noisy street with all the traffic and people shouting outside, but inside it’s just us and the cloth. We don't do any big advertising. People usually find us because they were already in the bazaar for something else. We just show what we have and let people decide for themselves. Some days are quiet and we just sit and talk, other days everyone wants to see twenty different sarees at once. We just keep doing what we do, selling clothes to the local folks and whoever else wanders in from the hotel across the street. It’s a simple life.
