About Silda Milk Processing Unit – Food & Beverages in East Khasi Hills
Up here in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, things move at a slightly different pace. Our Silda Milk Processing Unit is at Kesamon House, and it’s surrounded by a lot of greenery. The weather can be quite unpredictable, with a lot of rain and fog rolling in over the hills. This sometimes makes the roads a bit difficult, but we manage to keep the unit running. We work with the local farmers who bring their milk to us every day. It’s a small operation, and we do a lot of the work by hand. The building itself is older and has a lot of character, but we’ve fitted it out with the cooling and processing equipment we need. It’s often quite cool inside the unit, which is good for the milk but means we have to wear heavy sweaters most of the year. We don't have a big marketing budget or a fancy website. Most people find out about us through word of mouth in the local villages. We spend our days testing the milk, pasteurizing it, and getting it ready for the local market. It’s a quiet life compared to the big cities. Sometimes we sit outside on the porch of Kesamon House during our breaks and just look at the hills. It’s a lot of hard work to maintain the standards we want, but it’s satisfying to see the final product. We’re just a small part of the community here.
