Chanakya Hospital

Rayavaram is a small place, and Chanakya Hospital is one of the main spots people go when they aren't feeling their best. We are located right on the main road, so it’s easy to find even if you’re coming from one of the outlying farms. The building is a simple one-story structure with a wide porch where people often wait when the inside gets too warm. We have a lot of patients who come in covered in dust from the fields, and we don't mind one bit. The doctors here are used to seeing everything from basic colds to more serious accidents that happen with the machinery. We have a small laboratory for basic tests, which saves people a long trip into the bigger towns. The nurses are mostly local women who know everyone’s family history, which helps a lot when we’re trying to figure out what’s wrong. We don't have fancy uniforms; we just wear what’s practical for the work. The fans on the ceiling spin all day long, and in the rainy season, the sound of the water hitting the tin roof is so loud you can hardly hear yourself think. We keep our supplies in metal cupboards that we lock up every night with heavy keys. It’s not a complicated operation, but we’ve been here for years and we know how to take care of our own people in Rayavaram.
