Me and my brother have been at this spot in Gandhi Nagar Gali No 1 for more years than I can count on my fingers. Our shop is at number 3458, and if you know this area, you know how tight these lanes get. It is always loud outside with people pushing carts and the tea guy shouting. Inside, it's just us and the stock. We started with almost nothing, just a few racks. Now the place is full. My father used to sit here before us, and he taught us how to handle the different types of people that walk in. Some days it is so busy we don’t even have time to eat lunch until four in the afternoon. Other days, when it rains, we just sit on the stools and watch the water run down the street. We don’t have a big office or anything fancy like that. It’s a simple setup with a counter and some fans that squeak when they turn. People come here because they know we’ve been here forever. We recognize the regulars and know which ones will bargain for an hour and which ones just want to get their stuff and go. It’s not an easy life being in the market all day, but it’s what we do. Gandhi Nagar has changed a lot, buildings going up and new people coming, but 3458 stays pretty much the same.
