We are over at the Ghazipur fish market, specifically at shop 247 in the Ancillary Block. If you have ever been to the Shaheed Ashfaqullan Khan market, you know how chaotic it gets. It is wet, it is loud, and there are trucks everywhere at three in the morning. We are right in the middle of all that. We get our fish in early when most people are still asleep. The floor is almost always damp and there is a lot of ice around to keep everything cool. It is hard work and your hands get cold very quickly in the winter. We don't have a quiet office or a clean suit to wear. We wear rubber boots and aprons because that’s what the job needs. Many of the other sellers have been our friends for a long time. We talk about the prices and the catch while we wait for customers. It’s not the kind of place you come to for a quiet chat, it’s a place for business. We don't have a mission statement or anything like that. We just sell fish and try to make enough to keep the shop going. The smell is something you just get used to after the first week. It's a real, raw place to work. There are no fancy decorations here, just crates and weighing scales. We deal with the noise and the mud every single day. That's just how the fish market works.
