Shree Laxmi Marble Store

Our store is on G.S. Road in Guwahati, right near the Good Health Hospital. If you’ve been on G.S. Road, you know the traffic is a nightmare most of the time. We’ve been here for a while, selling marble and tiles to people around the city. The shop isn't huge, but we cram as many samples as we can onto the walls and floor. It’s always a bit of a mess because of the rain here in Assam. People come in with muddy shoes and we are constantly mopping the floor. We spend our time showing people the different shades of stone and trying to explain why one is different from the other. It’s a lot of standing around and talking. When an order comes in, we have to get the pieces from the back or the warehouse, which is always a bit of a struggle in the narrow space. We don't have any fancy sales pitch. We just tell people what we have and what it costs. Sometimes we run out of a particular tile and have to wait for the truck to come up from the south, which can take forever. It’s just the two of us running the front most days. We drink a lot of tea and wait for the traffic to die down so we can go home. It’s a simple life, just selling stone.
