Murugan Lathe Works

Being right by the Nilakottai Post Office makes us easy to find. Murugan Lathe Works has been a part of this area in Dindigul for a while. We spend most of our daylight hours at the lathe. It's a bit dusty here, but that's what happens when you're turning metal. We see a lot of people coming in from the surrounding farms and shops. They usually have something that’s worn out or snapped. We look at it, see if it can be salvaged, and then get to work. It’s not a quiet place to sit and chat, but people stop by anyway. The post office workers wave when they walk past. We’ve got the old machines that still run fine if you treat them right. Every morning we open up at 514 and start the motors. The smell of metal shavings is something you get used to. Sometimes the heat in Dindigul gets pretty intense during the summer months, but we just keep the fans going. It’s honest work and it keeps us busy. We don't do much fancy talking. If a job is tough, we just spend more time on it. Most people around here know us by name. We grew up in these parts and don't plan on going anywhere else. The work keeps us grounded and connected to the town. We just do the repairs and the turning as needed. It’s a living and it’s what we know.
