We’re located about 6 kilometers away from Periyakulam, out in the Theni area. This place is part of the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, and it’s a whole lot of land to look after. We spend our days dealing with plants, soil, and whatever insects decide to show up that week. It’s not a typical office job by any means. Most of us have dirt under our fingernails by noon. The Horticultural College Res Institute Tamil Nadu Agriculture University has been out here for quite some time now. The walk from the main road can be a bit long if you don’t have a bike or a ride. We see a lot of students coming through, trying to learn how things grow. Sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate and we lose a crop to the rain or heat, which is frustrating but just part of the work. There’s a lot of paperwork too, mostly tracking how different trees are doing over the seasons. It’s quiet out here, away from the main town noise and the traffic. You can hear the birds more than the cars most afternoons. We have a small staff who knows every corner of the fields. We don't have fancy vending machines or anything like that, just a simple kettle in the small breakroom. It’s a practical place where we focus on the plants and the dirt. People come here to learn, and we do our best to keep the gardens in decent shape.
