Running Saikia Hardware in Sonari Chapari is a full-time job that keeps me busy from sunrise. We are located in the Dhakuakhana tehsil of Lakhimpur district, right near the Government High School. You can often hear the school bell ringing and kids shouting during their breaks. It is a quiet enough part of the world, but there is always someone needing a shovel, some nails, or a new lock for their gate. The shop is just a simple building where we store all the heavy stuff. It gets quite hot in the afternoons, so we usually sit near the front door to catch whatever breeze there is. My hands are usually a bit dirty from handling the iron and the bags of cement, but that is part of the life. We don’t have a website or any of those modern things; we just talk to people face to face. Folks from the village come in, we talk about the crops or the school, and then they buy what they need. It’s a slow pace of life compared to the big cities, but I like it that way. We make sure we have the basics that farmers and homeowners in this district require. It’s nothing fancy, just a room full of metal and wood supplies. If you’re passing by the high school, you’ll see us right there. We just keep the doors open and try to be useful to everyone in Sonari Chapari.
