If you've ever walked down Lamington Road, you know how busy it gets around here. Our shop, Ambika Appliances Pvt. Ltd., is tucked into the Sumangala Complex. It’s not a huge place, but it’s usually packed with boxes and people looking for things for their homes. We’ve been here for a good while now. Most days start with us opening up the shutters and dusting off the shelves. There is always tea being passed around in small glasses while we talk about what needs to get done. We deal with all sorts of appliances, things people actually need in their kitchens or living rooms. It's noisy outside with the traffic, but inside we just focus on the work. Sometimes the phone rings off the hook and other times it’s quiet enough to hear the fan whirring overhead. We aren't a fancy place. There are no shiny glass displays or high-end lighting. Just rows of stock and a desk that’s seen better days. Most of the guys working here have been around for years. We know each other's families and what everyone likes for lunch. We don't spend much time on fancy websites or big ads. People usually find us because they were already in the neighborhood or someone they know told them we have what they are looking for. It's a simple way of doing things, but it keeps the lights on and the customers coming back through the door. We just try to be helpful and honest about what we have in stock.
