Working with leather is a hard and often dirty job. Our workplace is located in Vasant Kunj. It is definitely not a big, shiny showroom with bright lights and fancy mirrors. It is much more of a workshop where real work happens every day. The smell of the raw hides is very strong the moment you walk through the door. We have all sorts of tools scattered across the workbenches. Hammers, sharp knives, and heavy needles are sitting everywhere. We spend most of our day cutting pieces of leather and stitching them together. My hands have a few scars and calluses from doing this for so long. We make basic things like belts and bags. It is very slow work because you cannot really rush when you are dealing with leather. If you make one wrong cut, you have to throw the whole piece away and start over. We do not have a large staff here. It is just a few of us who actually know how to handle the material properly. The floor is usually covered in small scraps of brown and black leather. We do not have a website and we do not pay for any advertisements. People usually hear about us from their friends or family. We just stay focused on whatever task is right in front of us. Sometimes the old sewing machines get stuck and we have to spend an hour or two fixing them up. It is a dusty place but it feels like home.
