The Yum Yum Tree

You can find us at the Friends Colony Community Centre. It’s a nice enough area with some trees around, which makes it feel a bit different from the busier parts of the city. Our building is easy to spot once you get into the center. Inside, we have quite a bit of space, but it fills up quickly on the weekends. The furniture is a bit heavy, and moving it around for big groups is a workout for the staff. We spend a lot of time checking the inventory and making sure the kitchen has what it needs. The staff has a routine of setting the tables every morning, making sure the napkins are folded and the salt shakers are full. It’s not a perfect place—sometimes a chair squeaks or the music is a little too loud—but it’s where we work every day. We don't have a big corporate handbook on how to treat people. We just try to be decent and get the food out on time. The windows are large, so you can see people walking by outside while you eat. We have to clean those windows a lot because of the dust from the street. Sometimes we run out of certain items if the delivery truck is late, which happens more than we’d like. It’s just a regular restaurant run by regular people who are trying to keep things moving as best as they can.
