At Sumitomo Mitsui Construction India Ltd., our spot is over on Jhill Road in Dhakuria. Kolkata is a crowded place, and this area near 43/5C is no different. It’s got that old-city feel where everyone knows each other. We’ve been operating out of here for a bit, dealing with the humidity and the narrow lanes. Usually, the office is full of drawings and empty chai cups. We do construction work, which means we are usually out on the field more than we are sitting behind a desk. When we are in the office, it’s mostly to sort out the logistics or wait for a delivery that’s stuck in traffic. The rain in Kolkata can really mess with the schedule, but we just deal with it. It’s not a corporate skyscraper or anything; it’s just a practical space where the work gets planned. The staff here are locals mostly, so we know the shortcuts and where to get the best snacks nearby. We don’t have much to say about ourselves other than we show up and do the job. The building itself is plain, and we like it that way because we’re here to work, not to show off. Most days are long, starting early before the sun gets too hot. By the time we wrap up, Jhill Road is usually packed with people going home. It’s a busy life, but it suits us fine. We don’t spend our time on fancy words because there is always a site that needs our attention. It is just the way we work.
