We’ve been running Shalom over in Vasant Vihar D Block Market for some time now. It’s a nice area, but like any place, it has its ups and downs. Some days the market is packed and we can barely keep up with the people coming through the door. Other days, it’s a bit quieter and we spend more time cleaning or fixing things that broke during the rush. D Block is a local spot, so we see a lot of the same people every week. It’s nice to know the names of the folks who live just down the street. We don’t put on any acts here. What you see is what you get. The kitchen is small and gets very warm, especially when all the equipment is running. We’ve had to learn how to work in tight spaces without getting in each other's way. It’s a bit like a dance, I guess. We don’t have any big corporate goals. We just want to do our jobs and make sure the place stays open. There’s always something to do, like checking the inventory or mopping the floor for the fifth time because someone tracked in mud. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s ours. Being at Shalom in Vasant Vihar is just our daily routine. We show up, we work, and we go home. It’s a simple way to live, and we’re alright with that.
