I am a land surveyor working out of the Gammon India Colony in Kalpakkam. My place is located at H.No D-19, which is right where a lot of the activity for the PFBR project is taking place. If you have ever been around this part of Tamil Nadu, you know it is a high-security zone because of the nuclear plants nearby. My work involves spending most of my time out in the sun with a tripod and a total station. It definitely isn't a desk job where I sit in the air conditioning all day. I am usually walking over rough ground, marking out points, and checking the elevations for the construction crews. The colony here is where a lot of the workers and engineers stay while the project is ongoing. It is a bit isolated from the bigger towns, but we have the basics we need. I started doing this because I liked being outdoors and working with maps and measurements. Now, I just take the data as it is needed for the site work. There is always a lot of dust and noise from the heavy machines working nearby. I don't have a big office or a staff of people. It is mostly just me and my surveying gear. Sometimes the humidity gets really high, and the sea breeze from the coast is the only thing that helps. It is just a practical, hardworking life on the project site.
