Our place is at 1934, occupying the second and third floors right across from the fountain in Chandni Chowk. Being near the Sis Ganj Gurudwara means we hear the prayers and the crowds every single day. It’s a historic area, and our building definitely shows its age with the narrow staircases and high ceilings. Carrying heavy boxes of lights up to the second floor is a real workout, let me tell you. We don’t have a lift, so we just have to be careful not to trip on the old steps. The third floor is mostly where we keep the bulk of the stock, while the second floor is where we do the actual business. Chandni Chowk is always a bit of a gamble with the weather; if it rains, the whole street gets messy, but the shop stays dry. We have been here for a good while and have seen the neighborhood change quite a bit. Inside, it’s a bit of a maze with all the different chandeliers and lamps hanging from the ceiling. It’s not the most modern setup, and the wiring in the building itself is probably as old as the walls. We spend our mornings dusting the glass and checking the bulbs. It’s a lot of work to keep a place this old running, but we like the location and the history of it. People stop by just to look at the fountain and then wander in.
