Down in Subhash Mohalla in Gandhinagar, we have been running Paras Thread for quite some time. We are in Gali No. 5, which is a very busy lane full of people carrying heavy bundles of cloth. Our shop is quite narrow, but it goes back a long way. Every inch of the wall is covered with shelves full of thread spools. We have every color you can imagine. Sometimes tailors come in with a tiny scrap of fabric and we have to find the exact match. It can take a while because some colors are very similar. The air is always full of tiny bits of lint, so we have to clean the glass counters every few hours. It’s a family business. My father is usually sitting near the entrance, and I handle the orders in the back. We sell to small workshops and people who sew at home. We don't have a computer for the stock. We just know where everything is by looking at the boxes. It gets very loud in the street with all the carts and the people shouting. We don't have a fancy storefront. The shutter is old and a bit hard to pull up in the morning. We just focus on keeping the stock full. If someone needs ten boxes of white thread, we usually have them ready to go. It’s a lot of lifting and moving things around, but it’s a good trade.
