We’ve been operating out of No. 482 Katra Asharfi for a long time now. If you’ve ever visited Chandni Chowk, you know how intense it can be with the narrow lanes and the constant stream of people. Our shop is right in the thick of it. It’s a small space, and we have sarees stacked from the floor right up to the ceiling. There’s barely enough room for two people to pass each other in the aisles. We don't have any of those fancy modern displays you see in the malls. Instead, we have old wooden shelves and a few benches for people to sit on while we pull down the different fabrics. The lighting is just a few basic tubes, and the fans are old, but they keep the air moving on those hot Delhi afternoons. Most of our day is spent unfolding and then carefully refolding the sarees. It’s a lot of work for the hands. My brother and I usually handle everything, from talking to the people who walk in to keeping track of the inventory in our old ledger books. The walls are a bit yellowed and could use some work, but we’re too busy to worry about that. We have a tea stall right outside that brings us chai in glass tumblers every few hours, which is a nice break from the noise. It’s a very traditional way of doing business, and we like the history of being in this specific market and building.
