Our place, Anita Die Casting Co. Pvt. Ltd., is out on GT Karnal Road in the industrial area at A-68/4 & 5. It gets incredibly hot in the summer because of the furnaces and the way the building is set up. You can hear the heavy machinery from the street, a sort of constant thumping sound that you eventually stop noticing after a few hours. There’s metal scrap everywhere, and we have to be careful where we walk. We work with different molds and die-casting machines that have been around for quite some time. They’re reliable but they need a lot of oiling and maintenance to keep running right. The walls are stained with soot and grease, which is just part of the job when you’re dealing with molten metal and casting. We have a small area where we sit down for lunch, usually away from the main floor so we can hear each other talk. It’s a tough environment, dusty and loud, but it’s what we know. The workers here have been with us for years and they know the machines better than anyone. We spend our days making parts that most people never see, but they’re important for whatever they end up being used in. It’s a busy industrial spot and there’s always a truck waiting to be loaded or unloaded near the entrance. It keeps us on our toes and the day goes by pretty fast when you’re always moving.
