Sk Flour Mill

The mill sits right on the highway in Shanthigrama, at 984/4. You can usually smell the grain from quite a distance away before you even see the building. It is a dusty kind of life, with white flour coating almost every surface in the shop. We get farmers and local families coming in all day with bags of wheat or ragi, looking to get them ground down. The machines are old and they make a lot of noise, so we have to shout over them to hear what anyone is saying. Living and working right by the highway means there is a constant hum of traffic in the background. It is a simple operation. We take the bags, run them through the stones, and pack the flour back up. Sometimes the power goes out and everything stops, and we just have to sit outside and wait for it to come back on. It is not the kind of job for someone who likes to stay clean. By the end of the shift, we all look like ghosts from all the dust. Shanthigrama is a quiet enough place otherwise, and we have known most of the people coming through our doors for years. We don’t do any fancy packaging or anything. People just bring their own sacks and we fill them up. It is just the way things have always been done here at the mill.
