About Little Angel'S School – Education in Darjeeling
Little Angel’S School is tucked away on Neopane Lane in the Champasari area of Siliguri. It’s a smaller place, which makes it feel a bit more like a home than a big institution. We have kids from the local houses walking over every morning with their bags. Siliguri can be quite rainy, so we spend a lot of time making sure the kids don’t track mud into the classrooms. The rooms are filled with little chairs and colorful drawings the kids made on the walls. We don't have a huge staff, just a few of us who handle everything from teaching the lessons to fixing the latch on the gate. We know most of the kids by their first names and their parents too. The lane outside is usually quiet except when school starts or ends for the day. We have some potted plants near the entrance that we try to keep alive, though it's not always easy. Sometimes the monkeys come around from the trees nearby, which the kids find funny but we have to watch out for the lunches. We do our best with the books and the materials we have. It’s not a fancy place with a big budget. We just provide a place for the neighborhood children to spend their day and learn their basic lessons. We drink a lot of tea in the office and talk about how much the kids are growing up. It’s a simple, honest way to make a living in this part of town. We just keep at it every day, year after year.
