Chankaya Hotel Managmnet College is right there at Poor Home Chowk in Darbhanga. It’s a very busy part of town, so there is always a lot of noise from the rickshaws and traffic outside the windows. Inside the building, things are a bit different because everyone is focused on learning how to cook or manage a hotel properly. We have some kitchen areas where students practice making different dishes, and you can usually smell whatever is being prepared for the day from the hallway. It gets pretty hot in those kitchens during the summer, but the students seem to get used to it after a while. We aren’t some big corporate training center; it’s a local college where people from Bihar come to learn some useful skills for their future. The classrooms have the usual desks and whiteboards for the theory lessons. Sometimes the equipment breaks down and we have to get someone from the market to fix it quickly. We talk to the students about the reality of working in hotels, which is mostly long hours and a lot of standing around. The office handles the placements and the fees, and it’s usually a bit of a mess with files everywhere. People in the neighborhood know us because we’ve been at this spot for some time. We just want the students to learn how to do things right so they can find work in a good place. It’s practical work, and we just keep at it day after day.
