Amit Kirana Store

Our shop is located right near the Government School in Akbarpur, Darbhanga. Because we are so close to the school, we see a lot of kids running by in the mornings and afternoons. They usually come in for a single piece of candy or a small packet of biscuits. The rest of our day is spent helping the local families get what they need for their dinner. We stock a bit of everything, like rice, different types of dal, cooking oil, and of course, spices. Amit Kirana Store isn't a big supermarket; it’s just a room packed with shelves from floor to ceiling. Sometimes it is hard to find things if they get pushed to the back. We have an old wooden counter that has been worn smooth over the years. When it rains heavily in Darbhanga, the road outside gets really muddy, and we have to put down gunny bags so people don't slip. It can get a bit lonely in the middle of the day when everyone is at home, so I usually sit on a stool by the door and watch the street. We don't have any help, just family members taking turns behind the counter. We try to keep things simple and honest. If we run out of something, we just tell people to come back tomorrow after the delivery truck arrives from the main market. We close up around 8 each night and head back to our own homes.
