I work over at the KIOCL Township in Kavoor, Mangalore. My desk is at the C.S.-12 building. We’ve been handling iron ore operations here for quite some time now. Most people know us because of the big township where the staff and their families stay. It is like a little village inside the city. S. Shanmuga Pandian is the deputy manager for imports and exports, so he deals with a lot of the paperwork and logistics involved with the shipping side of things. Living and working in the same area makes things easier but it also means work never really stops. We deal with the day to day stuff of running a big industrial site. The weather in Mangalore can be really damp during the monsoon, which makes moving heavy loads a bit of a headache sometimes. We just focus on getting the shipments sorted and making sure the inventory is where it needs to be. It’s a lot of coordination between the different departments. Sometimes the phone doesn’t stop ringing, and other times it is just quiet office work. We aren't trying to do anything fancy, just keeping the iron ore moving from point A to point B. If you visit the township, you’ll see it’s a practical place built for the people who make the plant run. We’ve seen the industry change over the years but the core of what we do remains the same.
