Being located right by the NTPC in Dadri makes things interesting for Sri Ash Bricks Pvt. Ltd. We use the fly ash that comes from the plant nearby to make our blocks. It is a different process than the old clay bricks people used to use. We have these machines that compress the mixture into solid gray blocks. They are quite heavy and we spend a lot of time moving them from the press to the curing area. Water is very important for us because the bricks need to stay wet for a few days to get their strength. We have pipes running all over the ground for that. The yard is mostly gray because of the ash, which gets into your clothes and hair by the end of the shift. Dadri is a busy area and there is always something going on at the power plant. Our workers live close by, so they just walk or bike in every morning. We don’t have any big corporate signs or anything. Just a gate and the stacks of bricks. Sometimes the machines break down and we have to spend the whole afternoon fixing a hydraulic leak. It is just the way things go here. We don’t mind the hard work. It feels good to see the stacks grow taller every week. We just keep our heads down and handle the orders as they come in from the local builders who know we are here.
