About Assist Shift Engineer . – Engineering in Cuttack
Out here in Biribati, things move at their own pace. I work as the assist shift engineer, usually helping out with the technical stuff that happens during the long hours. Radhanatha Mohanty’s place is where we operate from. It's in the Cuttack district of Orissa, which is a nice area if you like the quiet. My job is mostly about making sure the machines don't stop and the shifts go through without any major breakdowns. It can be a bit dusty and the heat gets to you in the summer, but that's just how engineering work is in this part of the country. I didn't go to some big fancy school, just learned by doing and watching others who knew more than me. We don't have a big sign outside. It's just a local spot where people know to find me if something isn't running right. Usually, I'm checking the logs or fixing a gear that got stuck. There is a lot of waiting around sometimes, but then everything happens at once and you have to move fast. It's a simple life. Cuttack is home, and being at this post in Biribati feels right. I've been doing this for a while now. We don't use much technology besides the tools we need for the actual repairs. It’s practical work for practical people. We just keep things moving so the next shift doesn't have a mess to deal with when they arrive.
