The mill has been part of this neighborhood for a long time. People around here know the sound of our hullers starting up early in the morning. It’s a small operation, mostly catering to the local families and the small shops nearby. We don't have a big warehouse, so we try to move the stock in and out as fast as we can. The bags of paddy are stacked high against the walls, and the floor is always a bit slippery with the rice husks. It is a hot and humid place to work, especially when the machines have been running for a few hours. I spend a lot of my time talking to the customers who stop by on their cycles or walk over from the nearby houses. We don't bother with fancy packaging or branding. We just put the rice in plain bags and weigh it out right there on the old scale. It is a straightforward business without any complications. We know the people of Manjakuppam and they know us. There isn't much to it other than hard work and making sure the grain is processed properly before it goes to someone's kitchen for dinner.
