Udumalpet gets pretty warm during the middle of the day, especially out here on Tirupur Road. Our place at Indian Coconut Agencies is usually busy from the early morning when the trucks start rolling in. There are piles of coconuts everywhere you look, some still in their green husks and others already dried out. It’s a messy job sometimes with all the fibers and dust flying around in the air, but we’ve been doing this at No. 32-3 Vg Rao Nagar for quite some time now. The sun hits the front of the building hard in the afternoon, so we mostly stay in the shade of the warehouse area. It’s not a fancy office or anything like that. Just a lot of heavy sacks, some old wooden desks, and the sound of people shouting over the noise of the traffic. Sometimes the crows get into the piles and we have to shoo them away. We spend most of our time counting stock or talking to the drivers who come from the farms nearby. The tea shop down the street is where most of us head when the work slows down for a bit. It’s just how it goes here every day. The floor is mostly covered in dirt and coconut hair, and we stop trying to sweep it all up by noon because there’s no point. It’s a simple setup but it works for what we do.
