Tirupur is always moving and we are right in the middle of it. Our factory is where we make the stretch materials that go into clothes. It gets quite loud with the machines running all day long. Most of our workers have been here for years and they know the rhythm of the place. We don't have a big corporate lobby, just a small entrance and then rows of machines. The cotton dust is everywhere, but that's just how it is in this town. We focus on getting the elastic parts right because if they aren't good, the whole garment fails. Trucks come in and out to pick up rolls of fabric to take them to the stitching units nearby. Sometimes we have power cuts and everything stops for a bit, which is frustrating, but we just wait it out. The humidity here in Tamil Nadu makes the work tiring, so we try to keep the fans going. It’s a simple setup really. We take orders, we make the stretch bands, and we send them out. There's no big secret to what we do, just keeping an eye on the tension of the threads and making sure the colors match what was asked for. We eat our lunch together in the small back room. It’s a local business run by people who live right around the corner. We spend the evenings checking the logs and preparing for the next morning's early shift to stay on top of the orders.
