Down here at 2/42 A, Parakai Kalam in Pichanur, things move at their own pace. Coimbatore weather can be pretty intense, so the first thing we do is make sure the cooling is running right. The office is right there on the corner, and you can hear the bikes going past all day long. It's a simple setup. We have a few desks, a row of chairs for people to sit while they wait, and some old posters on the wall that have been there since before I started. Most of the work involves clicking through systems and making sure the numbers match up at the end of the day. It’s not very glamorous, but it’s what we do. We get a lot of people coming in from the nearby farms and small shops around Pichanur. Most of them are in a hurry, so we try to get through the paperwork as fast as the old printer allows. That printer has a mind of its own and jams if you put too much paper in at once. We usually eat our lunch in the small back room, taking turns so someone is always out front. You get to know the people around here pretty well after a while. You see their kids grow up and you hear about their family news while they wait for their passbooks to be updated. It’s just a normal workplace with normal people trying to get through the day.
