We operate out of unit 63 in the Sidco Industrial Estate. It’s a practical location for the kind of work we do at Filaments & Windings. Mostly, our days are filled with the sound of winding machines running. We deal with a lot of copper wire and different types of filaments that need to be coiled just right. If you walk into the shop, you’ll see big spools everywhere and people sitting at benches focusing on their tension settings. It’s the kind of work where you can’t really rush or the whole spool gets ruined. The Sidco estate is a busy place, and we are just one of many small units trying to get our orders out on time. It’s not very glamorous at all. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, and the lighting is just standard industrial tubes. We keep a close eye on the machines because they’ve been with us for a long time and we know their quirks. There’s a specific smell of warm metal and oil that stays in your clothes long after you leave. We don't have many visitors; it’s mostly just delivery guys dropping off raw materials or picking up finished batches. We take our breaks together and talk about whatever is going on in the news or around the estate. It’s a quiet life in a way, despite the constant noise of the machines. We just make sure the windings are tight.
