Fabric Today

Fabric Today is located on Samy Iyer New Street. It’s a bit confusing because the building has two numbers, Old No. 131 and New No. 166. I usually just tell people to look for the stacks of cloth near the entrance. The street is always full of people and carts, so it’s quite noisy from morning until late at night. We’ve got rolls of fabric tucked into every corner of the shop. It smells like cotton and dye in here, which I’ve grown to like over the years. We spend our time measuring out lengths of material and folding things up for customers. It’s a lot of standing on your feet, so my back usually hurts by the time we close up. We don't have any fancy displays or bright lights. We just use the natural light from the doorway as much as we can. The shop has been in the family for a while, and we haven't changed much about how we do things. We don't use any fancy computer systems for our inventory; we just keep track of it in a big ledger book. It’s a bit old-fashioned, I know, but it’s what we’re used to. People from all over the neighborhood come here because they know we’ve been on this street forever. It’s a busy life, but I wouldn’t know what else to do with my time if I wasn't here working on the street.
