The workshop is at 7/42, Ambigha Nagar in Saravanampatti. It’s a place filled with the sound of machines cutting through metal and the smell of coolant. We spend most of our hours looking at screens and adjusting the CNC settings to make sure everything comes out the right way. It’s technical work but it’s also very hands-on. Your hands are almost always covered in a bit of grease by the end of the shift. We have a couple of machines that take up most of the space, so you have to watch where you walk. Saravanampatti is a growing area but our little corner in Ambigha Nagar feels pretty settled. We get a lot of different parts to make, some small and some quite complicated. Sometimes a tool breaks or a program has a glitch, and we have to spend an hour figuring out what went wrong. It’s part of the job. We don’t have a front desk or anyone to answer the phones, so if we’re busy with a machine, you might have to wait a minute. It’s just us and the machines mostly. We keep the floor swept but metal shavings always seem to find their way into your shoes anyway. It’s not a clean office job, but it’s what we do. We just focus on the drawings and the metal until the piece is finished. Sometimes we work late into the night when there's a deadline to meet and the machines just keep humming along.
