Classic Dye Chem

You’ll find Classic Dye Chem at 1010 Rangai Gowder Street. We are right across from the Krm Kalyana Mandapam, which is a good landmark if you’re trying to find us for the first time. The street is usually crowded, especially when there’s an event at the mandapam. We’ve been in this location for a long time, dealing with dyes and various chemicals for the textile trade. The shop itself is old, with high ceilings and shelves that go all the way up. We use a rolling ladder to get to the stuff on the top rows. It’s dusty work sometimes, but seeing all the different colors in the jars is actually quite nice. We work with a lot of the local weavers and small garment shops around here. They come in looking for specific shades, and we do our best to help them find a match. There’s no fancy computer system here; we still do a lot of things by hand and keep our records in thick ledgers. It feels more reliable that way to us. The smell of the dyes is quite strong, but you stop noticing it after ten minutes of being inside. We usually have a fan going to keep the air moving. It’s a family-run kind of place, and we don't worry too much about looking corporate. We just want to make sure the customers get the right dye for their fabric. It’s a busy, colorful life on Rangai Gowder Street, and we enjoy it.
